SAD NEWS
RICK WRIGHT
founder member of Pink Floyd passed away at 65 years old on the 16 September 2008
As I recall without checking the history
Rick was a very important part of the Floyd sound and later overshadowed by Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters,
I would say listen to “burning bridges “ from “meddle” which is a perfect example of Ricks voice, the first verse is Dave Gilmour on vocals and Roger’s chord structure which slips into verse 2 of Ricks vocals and chords it shows his beautiful soft voice which perfectly blends with Dave’s voice in the third verse, basically Rick was mostly second vocal in Pink Floyd covering the harmony spot,
but not always Rick stepped up to the challenge when Syd Barrett was removed from the group and took over some writing and lead vocal duties, He wrote the single “it would be so nice” a very English pop song which unfortunately failed to dent the charts but was very catchy and deserved a place in the charts. The song is often put down by numerous Pink Floyd books I think mostly because it was more of the old sound Floyd, the song would easily fit into a expanded “piper” CD. It was covered by captain sensible almost note perfect and ourselves “Fattkatt & the Hippy” with a reggae feel along with heavier “remember a day” for volume 2
Another song by Rick is “paint box” a bside which again sounds like it could have been written by Syd, this has also been recorded by “Fattkatt & the Hippy” for volume 2 with a Indian feel to it and check out a version on “ a fair forgery” cover CD
Most tributes to Rick will mention “us & them” from “Dark side of the moon” a beautiful song written by Rick with lyrics by Roger waters and refused by the producer of “zabriski Point” to be included in the film, the film bombed and so the Pink Floyd songs are mostly unknown, his loss and our gain because it went on “dark side” the biggest selling album in the world at one point and earned Rick millions of pounds in royalties he also wrote “great gig in the sky” an instrumental and very popular showpiece for any tribute band for “Darkside”
For “Atom heart mother” Rick contributed “summer 68” (how do you feel) it has tempo changes and very interesting structure and lyrics which tell of spending a night with a groupie and how tomorrow will be another one who will look the same
Ricks first solo album recorded while still in pink Floyd around the time of “animals which Rick contributed 0 songs to was called “wet dream” unfairly slated mostly because it didn’t quite sound like pink Floyd. All the songs were floydesque but did not feature a dominant guitar and were of course very organ based but contains come very good songs
Other Rick wright compositions were “see saw” from “saucer” which rick never rated but still is one of my favorite tracks from that album. Rick CO-wrote many songs with a the band and a few with Roger Waters “stay” from “Clouds” was another great song, just a chilled out song
Ricks last composing credits for Pink Floyd (mrk 2) were for songs on “wish you were here” in 1975 during which the band hit personal problems that eventually forced Rick out of the band until his return in 1994 for the much acclaimed “division bell” album featuring again Rick Wright compositions
Rick went out on a high musically with the much acclaimed “broken china” SOLO album a very worthy “Floyd” album and also a tour with Dave Gilmour which for those like me who attended it was a Pink Floyd show (without the theatrics) add to that the Live 8 show and leaves us with some great memories
Rick will be missed by many including me
